Tesla is targeting gas car owners with a crazy new promotion launched on October 31, its latest move to boost sales amidst the loss of the $7,500 electric vehicle tax credit, which went away on September 30.

Tesla is now offering 2,000 free Supercharging miles to any gas car owner who chooses to trade their car in on a Tesla. The promotion requires a gas or hybrid electric vehicle to be turned in for any of the vehicles in Tesla’s lineup.

If you do that, you get 2,000 free miles of Supercharging, which can be utilized at any of the chargers on the Tesla network within the next two years:

Supercharging is rarely a Tesla owner’s primary source of charging, but for some owners, it is critical to their ownership experience.

While many homeowners or apartment dwellers are able to utilize charging infrastructure they either installed themselves or were provided by their property management company, others are totally reliant on the wide variety of charging options that are available today.

Tesla’s Supercharging Network has expanded rapidly over the past few years, mostly in preparation for the company to open it to other EV manufacturers, most of which have adopted the company’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) in the United States.

Its latest quarterly earnings Shareholder Deck revealed a 16 percent increase in stations in Q3 compared to the same timeframe in 2024. Meanwhile, connectors have increased by 18 percent in the same timeframe. There are over 73,800 connectors in the Tesla Supercharger Network globally.

The move could be looked at as a way to incentivize people to switch to electric vehicles, and it is something we have seen Tesla experiment with over the past month.

It has played with leasing terms, and we will likely see more incentive offers, like this Supercharging one or even Full Self-Driving trials for those who choose to make the switch over the next two months.

Tesla routinely offers some tasty deals in Q4 as it aims to round out the year with a strong delivery and production report for investors. Q4 is statistically Tesla’s strongest three-month period in any given year. However, Q3 was Tesla’s strongest performance in terms of vehicle deliveries in company history, as it narrowly missed the elusive 500,000 mark for a quarter.

Tesla rivals are lagging behind the company in alarming fashion in this crucial EV necessity: charging.

Tesla has had a long-standing reputation for having the most expansive electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and even as other companies have launched their own as part of the vehicle manufacturing, nobody seems to keep pace with the EV leader.

A report from Paren exhibited this trend in Q3, showing that Tesla overwhelmingly dominated EV charging stall installations over the past three months. This data is based on U.S. installations, where Tesla has long held a dominating position as the leader in overall electric vehicle sales for many years.

In Q3, Tesla installed 1,820 new chargers in the United States, bringing its total presence to 34,328, an all-time market share of 53.2 percent of all charging stalls in the country.

What’s alarming is the fact that all other networks — ChargePoint, Red E, Electrify America, EV Connect, EVgo, Ionna, Blink, Pilot Flying J, and Rivian Adventure — only installed 841 chargers collectively in Q3. That is nearly 1,000 units behind Tesla, despite there being nine companies contributing as competitors.

These nine networks have 10,055 stalls in total, the data from Paren shows, accounting for 15.6 percent of the chargers in the United States.

EV charging is such a crucial part of the ownership experience, and also a part of the ongoing expansion of EV adoption in the United States.

As more people buy EVs and they become a more prominent form of passenger transportation, more chargers are needed. Many owners charge at home, but charging options in public are important to have for traveling, commuting, and for those who do not have access to residential charging.

Tesla ownership without home charging: Here’s how it’s done

With Tesla opening its Supercharger Network to the majority of EV brands over the past two years, things have gotten better.

It has been alarming to see so many companies involved in EV infrastructure essentially accept the gap between Tesla and themselves; not a single company has tried to up its pace to catch up to what Tesla has.

When it comes down to it, as long as there is charging, the manufacturer does not truly matter.

However, it would be nice to see Tesla have some competition in the space, but with its domination and head start in the infrastructure division, it seems the company will have this competitive advantage for years to come.

Tesla is offering a tasty Supercharging incentive on inventory Model 3 units in Canada as it continues to push sales in the third quarter.

In the United States, Tesla is preparing for the end of the $7,500 electric vehicle tax credit. While it is offering a multitude of incentives in the U.S. to help push sales of its vehicles before the credit goes away, it is not saving the deals for Americans exclusively.

Yesterday, the company announced it is now offering Free Supercharging for life on all Model 3 inventory in Canada, a massive incentive for those who would use the vehicle as a daily driver:

The deal would normally only apply to Superchargers located in Canada, meaning if a Canadian drove over the border into the United States and Supercharged, they would have to pay for it.

However, Tesla also confirmed that the charging deal would extend to the U.S. Canadians will be able to drive across the U.S. and Supercharge for free for the life of the vehicle.

Free Supercharging is such a great perk because the money an owner saves on charging factors directly into what they are saving if they were to own a gas car. While Supercharging and home charging are, on average, cheaper than filling up with gas, the savings are not massive.

When Supercharging is free, it can save consumers hundreds of dollars per month, especially if they plan to use the Tesla for their daily commute. Some people could fill their gas cars up two times a week to get to work, spending $80-$100 every five days on gas.

Tesla has been using incentives like this to push vehicles into customers’ hands. Q3 could be one of the best three-month spans in recent memory with the push it is making.

The post Elon Musk says this essential Tesla Robotaxi feature will be here soon appeared first on TESLARATI.

]]>
Elon Musk reiterated that one feature, which is ultimately an essential part of the operation of the Tesla Robotaxi platform, will be here soon.

Tesla released a new video of its longest Full Self-Driving demo yesterday, showing off a zero-intervention drive from San Francisco to Los Angeles. The drive is roughly seven hours and 360 miles long, and not a single need for the driver to touch the wheel was recorded.

Tesla flexes its most impressive and longest Full Self-Driving demo yet

There was one question that was brought up by an owner that brings up an interesting point. Tesla still needs to solve the vehicle’s ability to pull into Superchargers automatically, something that does not currently have a high success rate, at least for the owner who got a response from CEO Elon Musk.

Musk assured him that a Tesla’s ability to pull into open parking spaces at Superchargers would be more reliable with future software updates. Owners can see how many and which exact stalls are available before traveling to a Supercharger, so Teslas should be able to identify these stalls and pull in automatically:

This is a small part of what will be imperative for the charging experience when Robotaxi launches in the coming years. Tesla plans to enable customer-owned cars to potentially enter the Robotaxi fleet and become an autonomous ride-sharing vehicle by next year.

However, it still needs to figure out autonomous charging. There are two parts to that process: pulling into the spot and charging without human need to connect the Supercharger to the vehicle.

Tesla used to consider a robotic snake-arm charger for this, but it has talked about induction charging more recently. Wireless charging seems to be the route that Tesla plans to go, but it might take some time to resolve the energy loss issue and make it an efficient charging method.

Tesla flexes Robotaxi wireless charging — autonomy from top to bottom

Tesla has said its wireless charging efficiency is “well above 90 percent.”

Nevertheless, Tesla is still working toward figuring out all of the edge cases of Robotaxi operation. Figuring out charging without the need of a human is just one part of the puzzle it still has yet to solve, but with its improvements over the past few years, there’s no doubt Tesla will find the missing piece.

Tesla to lose 64 Superchargers on New Jersey Turnpike in controversial decision https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-lose-64-superchargers-on-new-jersey-turnpike-controversial-decision/ https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-lose-64-superchargers-on-new-jersey-turnpike-controversial-decision/#respond Sat, 31 May 2025 15:23:50 +0000 https://www.teslarati.com/?p=291464 Tesla is set to lose 64 Superchargers on the extremely busy and congested New Jersey Turnpike.

The post Tesla to lose 64 Superchargers on New Jersey Turnpike in controversial decision appeared first on TESLARATI.

Tesla is going to lose 64 Superchargers on the New Jersey Turnpike after a decision by the Turnpike’s governing body was made not to renew its contract with the automaker.

On Friday, Tesla revealed that the New Jersey Turnpike Authority (NJTA) had officially decided to choose a sole third-party provider for its electric vehicle infrastructure. This resulted in the NJTA not renewing its contract to keep Tesla Superchargers on the toll road.

The NJTA also requested, with its decision not to renew with Tesla, that the company decommission all 64 Supercharger stalls, an unprecedented decision that will remove these plugs from the turnpike, making charging more scarce on the busy roadway.

Tesla detailed the situation on Friday:

“The New Jersey Turnpike Authority (“NJTA”) has chosen a sole third-party charging provider to serve the New Jersey Turnpike and is not allowing us to co-locate. As a result, NJTA requested 64 existing Supercharger stalls on the New Jersey Turnpike to not be renewed and be decommissioned.”

Tesla said it has been preparing for the potential that the Turnpike Authority would make this decision for three years by building 116 Superchargers nearby to still supply drivers with reliable charging infrastructure.

The company also noted that its Trip Planner would adjust automatically.

There were also efforts to maintain a relationship that would benefit both the Turnpike and EV drivers who use it.

Tesla said it offered the NJTA various “above-market commercial items,” like an offer to build Superchargers at all New Jersey Service Plazas with equipment upgrades like screens and adapters for those companies who have gained access to its charging piles but need to utilize the NACS and CCS1 plugs.

The decision is one that seemed to baffle the company, especially as infrastructure is one of the biggest concerns among EV skeptics:

“Tesla always advocates for more infrastructure and co-location with additional third-party charging providers. This drives down costs through optionality, and accelerates EV adoption by having sufficient capacity to shoulder peaks. We expect that ~30 times more fast-charging capacity is needed to get to full EV adoption. NJTA’s decision to remove, rather than add, critical charging infrastructure is a setback for New Jersey’s EV adoption goals of 100% Zero-Emission New Car Sales by 2035. It removes Turnpike access to the most reliable (99.9% uptime), least congested (<1% waiters) and cost-effective (~30% lower $/kWh) charging. “

The company said it was more than willing to invest in Turnpike sites if the Authority or New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy wanted to reverse the decision.

Tesla is bringing its latest juicy offer to the table in an effort to boost end-of-year electric vehicle sales, a routine occurrence for this time of year and nothing anyone should be surprised about.

At the end of the year, Tesla usually tends to offer various incentive packages like free Supercharging, free Full Self-Driving trials, or even lower prices on its vehicles to push deliveries upward.

2024 shows the company is not adopting a different strategy. Tesla is preparing to deliver roughly the same number of vehicles as last year when it handed over 1.81 million cars to owners in 2023.

This year, the company spent time developing its next-gen platform, a project that contributed to a “notably lower” growth rate in 2024.

This should be the only year we see Tesla hover around the same number of deliveries as it did in the past. However, it is ensuring it at least passes the mark of last year by rolling out its end of year offers.

Tesla is now offering three months of Full Self-Driving (Supervised) and free Supercharging for any customer that takes delivery of a new inventory vehicle by the end of the year.

Tesla said in its announcement that this offer cannot be postponed to a later time or transferred to any other account or vehicle. Used vehicles and business orders are excluded from the promotion.

However, the offer is valid on any Tesla model, including Cybertruck, so there are no limitations as to which vehicle you can buy.

This is not the only active promotion Tesla is using to push sales out as the year comes to an end. In Europe, it is also offering one year of free Supercharging on Model Y deliveries that occur before the end of the year, a great offer.

Tesla is launching a crazy Supercharging incentive in Europe for Model Y, offering one free year of charging at the automaker’s expansive network if delivery is taken by the end of the year.

Tesla is known for pushing the envelope in terms of what it offers to push sales upward toward the end of the year. The company has used things like discounts, free Supercharging, and other incentives to pad delivery figures as the end of the year approaches. It is something we have seen many times in the past.

2024 is no different.

Tesla is offering free Supercharging for one year in Europe for those who take delivery of the Model Y by the end of 2024:

Tesla has yet to launch any major delivery and demand triggers in the United States, but as it is still early November, it seems the company could be waiting until closer to December to get things going.

Last year, the Austin, Texas-based electric vehicle maker slashed $3,750 from both the Model 3 and Model Y in an effort to boost sales during the last ten days of the year.

It then doubled this discount to $7,500.

Tesla increases December’s unexpected discount of U.S. Model 3 & Y to $7,500

The discounts did not take effect until December 22. Analysts saw it as a crack in the armor of Tesla for pushing a substantial discount right as the end of the year was approaching.

This makes it interesting moving forward because some potential buyers might wait for Tesla to bring these discounts before buying a car. With its recrd of pushing deals on cars so late in the year, we will likely see Tesla make a similar move in the U.S. in the coming weeks.

Tesla is aiming to improve Supercharging performance for its electric vehicles in its latest software update, making life easier for owners, especially in colder climates.

Cold weather and colder climates are tough on electric vehicles, mostly due to the temperature and its impact on battery performance. In the past, Tesla has combatted issues in cold weather with things like the heat pump, which has now been adopted by other automakers, like Ford, to increase performance and fight range loss when it is cold outside.

Hardware is not the only way to combat these issues, though. Tesla is showing that with a new improvement to its battery preconditioning, and it is rolling it out in a software update.

Tesla Model Y heat pump solves range impact in cold climates

Tesla said it would release “Cold Weather Improvements” to its vehicles in Software Update 2024.44, and it will be especially relevant to those who are utilizing the automaker’s charging piles at Supercharging locations.

Tesla writes in the release notes for the feature (via Not a Tesla App):

“Battery Preconditions have been improved to provide better Supercharging, as well as better automatic windshield defogging before, during, and after Supercharging.”

In an effort to make a more well-rounded and convenient charging experience, Tesla not only continues to build out more Superchargers across the world, but it also makes somewhat regular and routine improvements to the tech it already has. It is something that can be consistently improved upon due to the Over-the-Air updates that Tesla rolls out.

With the struggles that some owners feel in cold weather, these improvements and updates to the Supercharging performance in these temperatures are drastic and crucial.

However, it should be noted that EV ownership in cold weather regions is not as difficult as some might make it seem.

The technology being developed and improvements being made across nearly every EV maker are working to eliminate any shortcomings the vehicles might have in colder temperatures.

Tesla has spent $18 million to expand its Supercharging presence in New York City as it acquired a lot in the borough of Queens on August 16.

Perhaps one of the most difficult parts of being an electric vehicle owner in New York City is the fact that charging is in short supply, leading to a problematic ownership experience.

Earlier this year, we discussed how Tesla combatted congestion with EV owners who drive Lyft and Uber with congestion fees.

The automaker also confirmed earlier this year that it would build more Supercharger sites in New York, with more locations coming to the boroughs of Queens, Staten Island, and Brooklyn.

Tesla plans to expand Supercharger presence in New York City

Now, it seems Tesla is making that move by building on an $18 million lot in Queens.

First reported by the Commercial Observer, Tesla bought an $18 million lot that spans over 40,000 square feet in size from Wildflower, a real estate firm.

Credit: New York City Department of Finance – Office of the City Register

The deal was signed by Max de Zegher, one of the two Supercharging executives who was let go in April as Tesla started to eliminate up to 20,000 employees. de Zegher was brought back by Tesla in May.

New York City has become one of the most prevalent areas in terms of EVs for ride-sharing. The City has incentivized drivers to choose EVs through various programs, but real estate is so hard to come by that charging continues to be an issue.

However, it seems there are more attempts to build out a charging infrastructure in the Big Apple, as it certainly needs it. NYC plans to have a zero-emissions fleet and also has wants to install 13 fast-charging hubs, a charging depot in the Bronx, and 30 fast-chargers at the Taxi and Limousine Commission’s Woodside inspection facility.

A former leader in the Tesla Supercharging program has officially accepted a new position with Uber, in efforts to help the ride-sharing company shift to electric vehicles (EVs).

Rebecca Tinucci, former Tesla Senior Director of the Supercharger program, has accepted a position as Uber’s Global Head of Sustainability, according to a report from Bloomberg on Tuesday. Tinucci plans to start in the role on September 16, reporting to Uber SVP of Mobility Andrew Macdonald.

“After many conversations with great people about my next steps, I was still struggling on where to land and how to be truly impactful,” Tinucci wrote in a post on LinkedIn following the report. “Then, Andrew Macdonald emailed me about joining Uber.”

Tesla Supercharger team member shares insights after getting rehired

Tinucci also shared a shoutout to Tesla SVP of Powertrain and Energy Drew Baglino in the post, saying that many of the people at Uber have been similarly focused on advancing sustainability to how he and his team when she was hired in 2018. She also says she’s “all in” on helping Uber advance clean energy efforts, as it sits at the intersection of autonomy, EVs, and robotics set to transform the world over the coming decades.

Tinucci was let go by Tesla in April, alongside much of the Supercharger team and the larger company. Despite hiring back Director of North American Charging,Max de Zegher in May, Tinucci was not among the re-hired employees.

Last year, Tinucci was highlighted by the Time Magazine 100 Climate List as pushing the industry forward through mass adoption of Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS). During her time with the company, she also oversaw the rollout of early V4 Supercharging hardware, the $100 million deal with BP (formerly British Petroleum), and the implementation of much of the Destination Charging program.
