Tesla is officially ditching the development of a key Cybertruck charging feature, and the reason is very obvious, all things considered.

The Cybertruck is among the most unique vehicles available on the market, and, like all Tesla vehicles, it has continued to improve through Over-the-Air software updates that enhance performance, safety, and other technological features.

However, the development of some features, while great on paper, turns out to be more difficult than expected. One of these features is the presence of wireless charging on the all-electric pickup, a capability Tesla has been working to integrate across its entire vehicle lineup.

Tesla wireless charging patent revealed ahead of Robotaxi unveiling event

Most people who have used wireless charging for their phones or other devices have realized it is not as effective as plugging into a cord or cable. This is even relevant with Tesla vehicles, as the introduction of wireless charging for smartphones within the vehicles has been a nice feature, but not as impactful as many would hope.

It’s not necessarily Tesla’s fault, either. Wireless charging is a complex technology because much of the energy intended to be transferred to the phone is lost through heat.

Instead of the energy being stored in the battery, it is lost on the outside of the phone, which is why it becomes warm to the touch after sitting on a charging mat.

This is something that Tesla is likely trying to resolve with its vehicles before rolling out inductive charging to owners. The company has confirmed that it is working on a wireless charging solution, but it has yet to be released.

However, this feature will not be coming to the Cybertruck. Wes Morrill, the Cybertruck’s lead engineer, said that the vehicle’s height makes wireless charging “silly,” according to Not a Tesla App:

“Wireless charging something as far off the ground as the CT is silly.”

This is something that could impact future vehicle designs; the Cybertruck might not be the only higher-ground clearance vehicle Tesla plans to offer to customers. Therefore, being transparent about a design’s capabilities, or even developing technology that would enable this, would be useful to potential buyers.

At this point, wireless charging seems like it would be more advantageous for home charging than anything.

Due to its current inefficiency, it would likely be a great way to enable seamless charging in a garage or residential parking space, rather than something like a public charger where people are looking to plug and go in as little time as possible.

This is mostly due to the inherent inefficiency of electromagnetic induction, which is the process that wireless chargers use to transfer energy to the phone.

The new Tesla Model Y L is officially launching in China at a great price and with all of the awesome features of the original model, but with more space. The vehicle is also addressing one huge complaint that many owners have discussed.

The new Model Y L features a more spacious interior, new front seats with adjustable headrests, captains chairs, and mechanical armrests in the second row, and B Pillar air vents for improved circulation.

Tesla Model Y L officially launched: price, features, and more

However, there are some other features that are flying under the radar, including one that addresses a common complaint of many Tesla owners: wireless charging.

If you have ever used a wireless charger inside a Tesla or almost any vehicle, for that matter, you will notice that your phone will charge slowly, and it will get extremely hot. This is mostly due to the inherent inefficiency of electromagnetic induction, which is the process that wireless chargers use to transfer energy to the phone.

The inefficiency is evident in the heat, as that is the lost energy that should be going to the phone, but does not.

To combat this problem, Tesla has rolled out a new feature with the wireless charging mat in the Model Y L.

Tesla has used small slit air vents in the center of the wireless charger, which separates the two pads, to blow cool air on the phones to prevent overheating:

This will keep the temperature of your phone down and could prevent the dreaded “iPhone too hot” message that deems your device unusable until it reaches a more stable temperature.

Additionally, Tesla has upgraded the driver’s side wireless charger to support 50W charging speeds. The passenger charger remains at 30W.

This is a small but valuable improvement to the wireless charging apparatus could be a game changer, as there have been so many complaints about this feature in other Tesla vehicles.

Tesla is flexing the Robotaxi’s wireless charging pad in a new video it released on Friday, showing how the vehicle platform will be completely autonomous from top to bottom.

The Robotaxi is already a driverless, steering wheel-less, pedal-less vehicle that aims to revolutionize transportation. Used as a ride-sharing platform, the Robotaxi will eventually transfer riders from Point A to Point B without any human needed.

However, more than just the vehicle operation will be fully autonomous.

Tesla will also use a wireless charging pad to create a full-fledged, completely autonomous driving and ownership experience. Instead of manually plugging in the Robotaxi when it is time to recharge, the vehicle will slide over a wireless charging pad, much like the one it unveiled at Investor Day in 2023.

Tesla teases mysterious “wireless” home charger on Investor Day

Tesla shared the video of the Robotaxi pulling over the charging pad and gaining range without any human intervention needed, truly creating an autonomous experience from top to bottom and start to finish.

Check out the video below:

The video does note a charging power of just 25 kW.

It would be nice to have some sort of information regarding whether this tech will be available for retrofit, especially considering many owners are curious as to whether Tesla will push the wireless charging capability to the rest of its lineup in the coming years, something that has been speculated since the automaker purchased Wiferion a few years back.

In reality, the charging rate does not truly matter to anyone because the vehicle is designed to take care of the rides and the riders on its own. There is no real reason for the charging rate to be of any concern.

The Robotaxi experience, from an ownership perspective, is truly like a long-term investment. It aims to make people money by giving rides through a dedicated ride-hailing app, which Tesla also teased in recent memory.

From a rider’s perspective, everything from the temperature to the music will be customizable. It truly caters to both the owner and the rider.

A new patent for a wireless charging pad submitted by Tesla has been revealed ahead of the company’s Robotaxi unveiling event.

Tesla is set to unveil its design for a Robotaxi, a fully autonomous vehicle that will operate as a ride-hailing service, on October 10 at Warner Bros. studio in Burbank, California.

Although it was originally scheduled for August 8, Tesla pushed the event back, and Elon Musk revealed the company would make one design change to the vehicle. The additional time would also allow Tesla “to show off a few other things,” Musk said.

We might have an idea of what one of those things might be, as a new patent, labeled “PARAMETER ESTIMATION FOR WIRELESS CHARGING,” was filed by Tesla:

It appears Tesla plans to utilize a wireless charging pad for the Robotaxi suite, which makes sense. If the vehicle is going to lack any sort of true human operation and be autonomous past the point of driving, it will need to be self-sufficient with charging as well.

Pulling into a garage or other structure with the wireless charging pad on the floor, as long as the vehicle also has an induction coil, would eliminate the need for a human to come plug the vehicle in. Of course, Tesla fooled around with the idea of a robotic “snake charger” that would automatically plug into the vehicle:

Tesla “snake charger” wasn’t just a creepy one-off, suggests Elon Musk

However, Tesla started teasing a wireless charging pad in early 2023 at its Investor Day. This pretty much eliminated any need for the “snake charger” and ultimately catalyzed a lot of rumors for the automaker and its development of a wireless charging pad.

The automaker then made a company acquisition, as it so commonly does when it gets into a new venture to streamline its product line. Tesla completed its purchase of Wiferion in July 2023. It then sold the company but kept many of its engineers.

Tesla sells wireless charging unit firm Wiferion, but keeps its engineers: report

What this patent essentially means is that Tesla is preparing to automate the entire Robotaxi operation. It could end up using this technology on other vehicles, but that remains to be seen.

We predicted that Tesla would unveil some kind of wireless charging technology at the Robotaxi unveiling event in an article yesterday.
