Rivian and Amazon have announced a huge milestone with their Electric Delivery Vehicle (EDV), the van that the two companies developed for the e-commerce giant to sustainably deliver packages to customers.

The EDV was first unveiled back in September 2019, when Amazon announced a massive investment in Rivian and placed an order for 100,000 electric vans, aiming to deploy them by 2030 as part of the company’s sustainability goals.

Production started in 2021 in Normal, Illinois, and entered Amazon’s fleet of active delivery vehicles over the Summer of 2022. Amazon kept the initial vehicles in major metropolitan areas and eventually started rolling them out to more delivery hubs across the United States.

In December 2024, the companies announced they had successfully deployed 20,000 EDVs across the U.S. In the first half of this year, 10,000 additional vans were delivered, and Amazon’s fleet had grown to 30,000 EDVs by mid-2025.

Amazon’s fleet of EDVs continues to grow rapidly and has expanded to over 100 cities in the United States. However, it has just reached a new milestone, and it has nothing to do with the size of its fleet.

The companies announced today that they had officially launched the EDV in Canada for Amazon, as the first 50 units are out and about in Vancouver, and the company said it was “marking an exciting milestone in our five-year history of operations in Canada.”

The EDV is a model that is exclusive to Amazon, but Rivian sells the RCV, or Rivian Commercial Van, openly. It detailed some of the pricing and trim options back in January when it confirmed it had secured orders from various companies, including AT&T.

The RCV starts at $83,000, and is one of the few electric vans on the market that is suitable for package delivery in a commercial setting because of its build and interior features.

Rivian prepares to launch the EDV outside of Amazon as the RCV – Here’s when

However, it also seems to be a great option as a service vehicle for companies, which is likely why AT&T is going to utilize it.

Amazon launches Kuiper satellites; Can it rival Starlink? https://www.teslarati.com/amazon-kuiper-satellite-starlink-rival/ https://www.teslarati.com/amazon-kuiper-satellite-starlink-rival/#respond Wed, 30 Apr 2025 13:03:39 +0000 https://www.teslarati.com/?p=289930 With 27 satellites in orbit, Amazon kicks off its $10B plan to deliver global broadband. Can Bezos’ Kuiper take on Musk’s Starlink?

Amazon’s Project Kuiper launched its first 27 satellites on Monday, marking the start of a $10 billion effort that could compete with SpaceX’s Starlink with a global broadband internet network.

Amazon’s Kuiper satellites launched aboard a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida. Project Kuiper’s recent launch is the initial step toward deploying Amazon’s 3,236 satellites for low-Earth orbit connectivity. Amazon’s satellite launch was initially set for April 9 but was delayed due to bad weather.

Now that the Kuiper satellites have been launched, Amazon is expected to publicly confirm contact with the satellites from its mission operations center in Redmond, Washington. The company aims to start offering Kuiper services to customers later this year. Project Kuiper was unveiled in 2019 and targets consumers, businesses, and governments who need reliable internet service, similar to Starlink.

Amazon has a deadline from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission to deploy 1,618 satellites by mid-2026. Analysts suggest the company may require an extension to its Kuiper satellite deployment deadline due to the project’s year-long delay from its planned 2024 start.

United Launch Alliance could conduct up to five more Kuiper missions this year, according to ULA CEO Tory Bruno. Amazon noted in a 2020 FCC filing that Kuiper services could begin with 578 satellites, initially covering northern and southern regions.

Kuiper’s launch pits Amazon against SpaceX’s Starlink and telecom giants like AT&T and T-Mobile, with a focus on underserved rural areas.

“There’s an insatiable demand for the internet,” Amazon Executive Chairman Jeff Bezos told Reuters in January. “There’s room for lots of winners there. I predict Starlink will continue to be successful, and I predict Kuiper will be successful as well.”

Global interest in satellite alternatives is rising. Ukraine is exploring Starlink alternatives with the European Union (EU), driven by concerns over Elon Musk. Germany’s military, Bundeswehr, also plans its own constellation to ensure independent communications. However, like Amazon’s Kuiper Project, EU options lag behind Starlink.

Amazon’s consumer expertise and cloud computing infrastructure give Kuiper a competitive edge despite Starlink’s market lead. As Kuiper ramps up launches, its success could reshape broadband access while challenging SpaceX’s dominance in the satellite internet race.

Starlink rival Amazon’s Project Kuiper plans to invest $20 million in Indonesia. Similar to SpaceX’s Starlink internet services, Project Kuiper is Amazon’s low earth orbit (LEO) connection service.

The initial investment will go toward building six gateway stations in the country as Amazon prepares to start Kuiper operations. Amazon plans to invest up to $90 million in Project Kuiper in Indonesia by 2035. The company aims to expand infrastructure and expand internet access in various regions of the country.

Indonesia’s Minister of Communication and Digital Application, Meutya V. Hafid, supported Amazon’s Project Kuiper.

“We want to ensure that every citizen, regardless of location, has equal access to digital technology. With the support of investment and innovation from the private sector, we can accelerate digital transformation and create greater opportunities for the community,” Meutya said.

Amazon has already applied for operational permits in Indonesia for Project Kuiper. The company is in the middle of processing telecommunications licenses and satellite leasing rights. Amazon Kuiper is also seeking to receive a Business Identification Number (NIB) to comply with Indonesia’s latest regulations on operations by foreign companies.

“We understand that connectivity is still a challenge in many remote areas. Therefore, we want to work with the government and local partners to provide wider internet access for the people of Indonesia,” said the Global Head of Licensing and International Regulatory Affairs at Amazon Project Kuiper, Gonzalo de Dios.

Besides Indonesia, Amazon’s Project Kuiper is also competing with SpaceX’s Starlink in the United Kingdom. As of September 2024, Amazon was reportedly close to receiving a license to start Project Kuiper operations in the UK.

SpaceX’s Starlink launched in Indonesia last year. Elon Musk visited Indonesian President Joko Widodo during Starlink’s debut in the Southeast Asian country.

Amazon has been known as one of the first companies to fully embrace the prospect of a fully-electric future by adopting EVs much sooner than many other companies.

However, its lineup and efforts go well past that of the Rivian EDV, a vehicle that helped launch the e-commerce giant’s efforts to make its business operations more sustainable.

In fact, Amazon is using a handful of different EVs to help make its business more climate-friendly, and some of the vehicles it uses might surprise you.

We’ll break down the Amazon EV lineup and what each is used for in its day-to-day business operations, showing how the EDV is just one of many parts of a future that aims to be more sustainable.

Rivian EDV

It’s hard not to start with the Rivian EDV. Back in 2019, Amazon launched its Climate Pledge, which included an agreement to buy 100,000 vans from Rivian that would be used for deliveries.

Amazon and Rivian designed the EDV specifically for the company to use. Other versions of what it calls the RCV are available, but they differ from the Rivian-built EDV, which is specific to Amazon.

It does not require a commercial driver’s license to operate, and many areas around the country have utilized them for deliveries.

E-Scooters

Amazon uses E-Scooters for package delivery in some regions, including India. Over 80 percent of its deliveries in the country are completed through two-wheelers that Amazon has developed with manufacturers.

These E-Scooters have many advantages, including maneuverability in densely populated areas, cost-effectiveness, ease of parking, and faster navigation compared to larger vehicles.

Three-Wheelers

Amazon uses three-wheelers, also referred to as “goods vans” to help deliver packages as well.

These vehicles were built through collaboration with various manufacturers.

Light and Medium-Duty Electric Trucks

These are used to transport packages between Amazon buildings or even to deliver larger packages, like refrigerators, to customers.

Eventually, there will be over 1,000 of these delivering packages or handling internal logistics in India. These vehicles are quiet and provide a better experience for drivers with a comfortable ride.

Heavy-Duty Electric Trucks

These are used for everything from hauling large containers containing packages from ports to Amazon facilities or between Amazon buildings.

Amazon currently has a fleet of about 50 of these heavy-duty electric trucks in California, its largest fleet of this vehicle type. It plans to roll out over 200 of them in Europe in the future.

Update 10:15 a.m. 1/24 – Update to EDV and RCV definitions. EDV is specific to Amazon, RCV is the van that will be sold to other companies.

Rivian is preparing to launch its Electric Delivery Van (EDV) to customers outside of Amazon in the coming weeks, marking the first time companies outside of the e-commerce giant since its launch in 2022. It will be called the Rivian Commercial Van (RCV).

The RCV starts at $83,000 and will be one of the few electric vans on the market that is suitable for commercial package delivery. It is sure to attract several big companies who are looking to enact sustainable measures to reduce their carbon footprints.

AT&T is one of those companies. In December 2023, it launched an EV pilot program to attempt to improve safety, reduce costs, and cut its carbon footprint. It committed to buying Rivian EDVs from the EV maker.

Rivian finds first partner after exclusive Amazon deal for its EDV

Hardmon Williams, SVP at AT&T Connected Solutions, said:

“We’re excited to purchase Rivian EVs for our fleet. This pilot is another important step in our ongoing efforts toward sustainability, reducing our carbon footprint and embracing a cleaner future for our operations. With advanced connectivity and a vision for a sustainable future, Rivian is setting the standard for the evolving demands of modern transportation.”

RJ Scaringe, Rivian’s CEO, also confirmed that Rivian had signed an agreement for EDVs.

Rivian has had an exclusive deal with Amazon for several years. In 2019, Amazon launched a climate pledge that saw a major investment in the EV maker, as well as a commitment to buy 100,000 EDV units from the company for its own fleet.

Amazon confirmed to Teslarati last month that it had officially reached 20,000 units.

Confirmation regarding the RCV being sold to companies outside of Amazon was first reported by the Detroit Free Press, which spoke to the company’s Director of Fleet Solutions, Erica Tsypin.

Amazon announced a major milestone in its electric vehicle transition, officially bringing 20,000 Rivian EDVs (electric delivery vans) into its fleet.

Back in 2019, Amazon announced its Climate Pledge to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. Part of the Pledge included a partnership with Rivian for 100,000 all-electric delivery vehicles. The goal was to have all EDVs on the road and in the Amazon fleet by 2030.

The first Amazon-Rivian EDV hit the road in 2022, and since then, the vans have made it to thousands of locations across the United States.

From Anaheim to Boston, Baltimore to Seattle, and everywhere in between, Amazon is using the Rivian EDVs to get packages to customers in a sustainable and Earth-friendly fashion.

The Rivian-Amazon EDV

The vans have also made their way to Europe, and more than 300 will be part of Amazon’s fleet in Germany.

The fleet is steadily growing. Amazon revealed to Teslarati that it has officially reached more than 20,000 Rivian EDVs in its fleet, one-fifth of the way to its 100,000-unit goal. In March 2023, Amazon had just 3,000 Rivian EDVs in its fleet.

The fleet is eliminating millions of metric tons of carbon every year and also uses state-of-the-art technology with an integrated workflow to make a driver’s job easier, more comfortable, and more streamlined than ever before.

In 2024 alone, Amazon used the Rivian EDV to deliver more than one billion packages to customers in the U.S.

The Rivian EDV also has plenty of charging capability, as Amazon has installed over 24,000 chargers at more than 150 delivery stations across America, ensuring range will never be an issue during a route.

SpaceX’s Starlink internet services will face off with Amazon’s LEO (low Earth orbit) internet service, Project Kuiper, in the United Kingdom (UK). Amazon’s Project Kuiper is close to receiving its license from the British telecommunication regulator, Ofcom, to offer services in the UK.

Last week, Ofcom requested comments on Amazon Kuiper Services Europe SARL’s application to operate in the UK. The British telecommunication regulator also released a statement suggesting that Amazon’s Kuiper application could be granted by October 4, 2024.

https://www.teslarati.com/elon-musk-starlink-cellular/

Once it is granted a license, Amazon Kuiper can provide terminals to customers in the UK so they can access the company’s internet services.

“Project Kuiper is an initiative to increase global broadband access through a constellation of more than 3,000 satellites in low Earth orbit. Its mission is to bring fast, affordable broadband to unserved and underserved communities around the world,” stated Amazon.

Amazon’s Kuiper services will directly compete with SpaceX’s Starlink, which has been offered in the UK for some time now.

Starlink currently provides high-speed internet services in residential areas for as low as £75 per month. Starlink hardware costs as low as £299 a month in the UK. Amazon has not announced its services and hardware prices in the UK yet.

Rivian is eager to begin ramping up the production and deliveries of its Electric Delivery Van (EDV), which has been used exclusively by Amazon for several years. It realizes it will have to explore customers outside of the e-commerce giant to justify the ramp-up, as it will need more customers.

During yesterday’s Q2 Earnings Call, Rivian revealed the EDV will be a bigger part of its business in the future, granted it has the demand for all-electric delivery vans. Ford’s Transit and Mercedes-Benz’s Sprinter van have both been electrified, and apart from those two models, there are not too many options in terms of EV vans for suitable businesses to buy.

Rivian wants to change that. After several years of a successful partnership with Amazon, the EDV has proven itself to be a good option for deliveries. It has expanded all across the United States after initially being available in just a handful of regions, and over 15,000 units have been used by Amazon for deliveries in the U.S.

However, Rivian wants more from the EDV and is planning to bring more companies on board now that the early stages of testing is over and the vehicle has proven itself to be a formidable competitor in the space.

Amazon announces milestones within Rivian EDV fleet

Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe said:

“And this focus on pilots is really reflective of the nature of this business, where these are large decisions around large numbers of vehicles for a lot of these bigger fleets. And it’s appropriate that we build effective working models for how the vehicles are serviced, what digital support the vehicles have, what infrastructure changes are necessary for each respective fleet.”

In December 2023, Rivian said it would partner with AT&T to bring the EDV to its first non-Amazon customer.

Hardmon Williams, the SVP at AT&T Connected Solutions, said:

“We’re excited to purchase Rivian EVs for our fleet. This pilot is another important step in our ongoing efforts toward sustainability, reducing our carbon footprint and embracing a cleaner future for our operations.”

Who else would be a suitable partner for Rivian and the EDV? Perhaps FedEx or UPS would use the van and find it suitable for next-day and priority deliveries. FedEx currently uses a non-electric Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van.

Hyundai Motor Europe teamed up with Amazon to meet customer demands. The South Korean automaker recently launched its first Brand Space on Amazon in Germany in April 2024.

“We are pleased to be extending our strategic partnership with Hyundai into Europe. We believe the new digital hub will provide an innovative way to introduce prospective customers to the Hyundai brand through a shopping experience they are already accustomed to, all while continuing to support local dealers,” noted Nils Gräf, the Managing Director of Amazon Ads in Germany.

Hyundai’s Brand Space offers customers a unique opportunity to engage with the automakers in a digital environment.

“Our collaboration with Amazon represents Hyundai’s strong commitment to meet customers’ demands on a channel they are already familiar with. By leveraging Amazon’s reach and the trust consumers have in the store, we are bringing Hyundai directly to customers’ fingertips, offering them the possibility to learn about our brand and vision and be guided to our local websites for more product details,” said Andreas-Christoph Hofmann, Hyundai Motor Europe’s Vice President of Marketing, Product & PR.

Hyundai will display ads on Amazon to direct customers to its Brand Space. Through Hyundai’s Brand Space, customers can learn more about the company and explore its product lineup. Customers may also schedule a test drive at local dealerships or play with a digital car configurator in the Brand Space.

Amazon and Hyundai have teamed up before. In November 2023, Amazon and Hyundai announced a collaboration on vehicle sales and in-car features. The partnership centered on three main pieces. However, the most significant piece might be that the deal allowed auto dealers to sell Hyundai vehicles through Amazon stores.

During CES 2024, Amazon showcased a Ford F-150 Lightning with Alexa. Amazon Alex was spotted in another vehicle at the event as well.

“It was a great week at CES highlighting our Alexa Built-in integration in the Ford F-150 Lightning at the Amazon Devices exhibit. We are so proud to collaborate with Ford Motor Company and showcase the experiences we have developed for our customers,” wrote Alexa Auto in a LinkedIn post.

Alexa Auto is Amazon’s attempt to bring its virtual assistant on the road and inside vehicles. Alexa Auto already has some tough competition in the field in the guise of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Alexa Auto might have an edge with customers relying on Amazon’s virtual assistant at home. Alex Auto would be an excellent way to tie people’s smart homes with their smart cars and other devices.

Amazon also teamed up with BMW to showcase Alexa Auto at CES 2024.

“Exciting things are brewing behind the scenes at the Amazon for Automotive booth. Get ready for the show and stay tuned for a glimpse into the future of automotive voice AI with Amazon and our partner BMW Group,” teased the Director and Head of Production and Business Development at Amazon Smart Vehicles.

Amazon has partnered with more than Ford to expand Alexa Auto’s audience. Ford’s battery electric vehicle (BEV) lineup is slim, and it doesn’t seem like the legacy automaker will grow its EV offerings anytime soon. In fact, Ford recently announced that it plans to reduce F-150 Lightning production and increase gas vehicle output.

Alexa Auto fits well with battery electric vehicles, which are often expected to come with the latest technologies. So Amazon might partner with other automakers on future battery electric vehicle releases.
