The EDV was first unveiled back in September 2019, when Amazon announced a massive investment in Rivian and placed an order for 100,000 electric vans, aiming to deploy them by 2030 as part of the company’s sustainability goals.

Production started in 2021 in Normal, Illinois, and entered Amazon’s fleet of active delivery vehicles over the Summer of 2022. Amazon kept the initial vehicles in major metropolitan areas and eventually started rolling them out to more delivery hubs across the United States.

In December 2024, the companies announced they had successfully deployed 20,000 EDVs across the U.S. In the first half of this year, 10,000 additional vans were delivered, and Amazon’s fleet had grown to 30,000 EDVs by mid-2025.

Amazon’s fleet of EDVs continues to grow rapidly and has expanded to over 100 cities in the United States. However, it has just reached a new milestone, and it has nothing to do with the size of its fleet.

The companies announced today that they had officially launched the EDV in Canada for Amazon, as the first 50 units are out and about in Vancouver, and the company said it was “marking an exciting milestone in our five-year history of operations in Canada.”

The EDV is a model that is exclusive to Amazon, but Rivian sells the RCV, or Rivian Commercial Van, openly. It detailed some of the pricing and trim options back in January when it confirmed it had secured orders from various companies, including AT&T.

The RCV starts at $83,000, and is one of the few electric vans on the market that is suitable for package delivery in a commercial setting because of its build and interior features.

However, its lineup and efforts go well past that of the Rivian EDV, a vehicle that helped launch the e-commerce giant’s efforts to make its business operations more sustainable.

In fact, Amazon is using a handful of different EVs to help make its business more climate-friendly, and some of the vehicles it uses might surprise you.

We’ll break down the Amazon EV lineup and what each is used for in its day-to-day business operations, showing how the EDV is just one of many parts of a future that aims to be more sustainable.

Rivian EDV

It’s hard not to start with the Rivian EDV. Back in 2019, Amazon launched its Climate Pledge, which included an agreement to buy 100,000 vans from Rivian that would be used for deliveries.

Amazon and Rivian designed the EDV specifically for the company to use. Other versions of what it calls the RCV are available, but they differ from the Rivian-built EDV, which is specific to Amazon.

It does not require a commercial driver’s license to operate, and many areas around the country have utilized them for deliveries.

E-Scooters

Amazon uses E-Scooters for package delivery in some regions, including India. Over 80 percent of its deliveries in the country are completed through two-wheelers that Amazon has developed with manufacturers.

These E-Scooters have many advantages, including maneuverability in densely populated areas, cost-effectiveness, ease of parking, and faster navigation compared to larger vehicles.

Three-Wheelers

Amazon uses three-wheelers, also referred to as “goods vans” to help deliver packages as well.

These vehicles were built through collaboration with various manufacturers.

Light and Medium-Duty Electric Trucks

These are used to transport packages between Amazon buildings or even to deliver larger packages, like refrigerators, to customers.

Eventually, there will be over 1,000 of these delivering packages or handling internal logistics in India. These vehicles are quiet and provide a better experience for drivers with a comfortable ride.

Heavy-Duty Electric Trucks

These are used for everything from hauling large containers containing packages from ports to Amazon facilities or between Amazon buildings.

Amazon currently has a fleet of about 50 of these heavy-duty electric trucks in California, its largest fleet of this vehicle type. It plans to roll out over 200 of them in Europe in the future.

Rivian is preparing to launch its Electric Delivery Van (EDV) to customers outside of Amazon in the coming weeks, marking the first time companies outside of the e-commerce giant since its launch in 2022. It will be called the Rivian Commercial Van (RCV).

The RCV starts at $83,000 and will be one of the few electric vans on the market that is suitable for commercial package delivery. It is sure to attract several big companies who are looking to enact sustainable measures to reduce their carbon footprints.

AT&T is one of those companies. In December 2023, it launched an EV pilot program to attempt to improve safety, reduce costs, and cut its carbon footprint. It committed to buying Rivian EDVs from the EV maker.

RJ Scaringe, Rivian’s CEO, also confirmed that Rivian had signed an agreement for EDVs.

Rivian has had an exclusive deal with Amazon for several years. In 2019, Amazon launched a climate pledge that saw a major investment in the EV maker, as well as a commitment to buy 100,000 EDV units from the company for its own fleet.

Amazon confirmed to Teslarati last month that it had officially reached 20,000 units.

Confirmation regarding the RCV being sold to companies outside of Amazon was first reported by the Detroit Free Press, which spoke to the company’s Director of Fleet Solutions, Erica Tsypin.

Back in 2019, Amazon announced its Climate Pledge to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. Part of the Pledge included a partnership with Rivian for 100,000 all-electric delivery vehicles. The goal was to have all EDVs on the road and in the Amazon fleet by 2030.

The first Amazon-Rivian EDV hit the road in 2022, and since then, the vans have made it to thousands of locations across the United States.

From Anaheim to Boston, Baltimore to Seattle, and everywhere in between, Amazon is using the Rivian EDVs to get packages to customers in a sustainable and Earth-friendly fashion.

The Rivian-Amazon EDV

The vans have also made their way to Europe, and more than 300 will be part of Amazon’s fleet in Germany.

The fleet is steadily growing. Amazon revealed to Teslarati that it has officially reached more than 20,000 Rivian EDVs in its fleet, one-fifth of the way to its 100,000-unit goal. In March 2023, Amazon had just 3,000 Rivian EDVs in its fleet.

The fleet is eliminating millions of metric tons of carbon every year and also uses state-of-the-art technology with an integrated workflow to make a driver’s job easier, more comfortable, and more streamlined than ever before.

In 2024 alone, Amazon used the Rivian EDV to deliver more than one billion packages to customers in the U.S.

The Rivian EDV also has plenty of charging capability, as Amazon has installed over 24,000 chargers at more than 150 delivery stations across America, ensuring range will never be an issue during a route.

On Friday, a Rivian spokesperson told Reuters that a shortage of parts caused a temporary pause on EDV production. Despite the pause, the electric vehicle (EV) maker expects to recover lost production, though the company has not disclosed the parts, nor the exact timeline for the pause.

“A part shortage has temporarily impacted our Electric Delivery Van (EDV) production,” wrote the spokesperson. “We expect to recover all missed production.”

Amazon, which is a 16-percent stakeholder in Rivian and the EV maker’s largest stakeholder, commented on the news, saying that it was familiar with the “short-term production issues this month,” though it didn’t expect it to change anything about overall production plans.

Rivian’s vehicles are produced at the company’s factory in Normal, Illinois, and while the company has plans to build an additional facility in Georgia, the automaker announced plans to delay construction of the upcoming plant earlier this year. Instead, Rivian moved plans for production of the upcoming R2 platform to Illinois, gaining a huge state incentive package for the next-generation EV.

The news comes just as Rivian has been preparing to ramp up production of the EDV, along with delivering to customers beyond Amazon for the first time. Rivian announced a partnership with AT&T to deliver EDV units last December, after officially announcing plans to work with companies besides Amazon just a month prior.

Amazon employees have been piloting the Rivian EDV units for the past couple of years, and the company earlier this month surpassed 15,000 of the vehicles on roads—or a more than 50 percent increase within the last nine months.

In late June, Volkswagen announced plans to invest $5 billion into Rivian, with the two companies set to partner on software and a jointly developed EV platform. The first $1 billion was included in Rivian’s Q2 earnings, and was transferred as a convertible note into the EV maker’s stock.

During yesterday’s Q2 Earnings Call, Rivian revealed the EDV will be a bigger part of its business in the future, granted it has the demand for all-electric delivery vans. Ford’s Transit and Mercedes-Benz’s Sprinter van have both been electrified, and apart from those two models, there are not too many options in terms of EV vans for suitable businesses to buy.

Rivian wants to change that. After several years of a successful partnership with Amazon, the EDV has proven itself to be a good option for deliveries. It has expanded all across the United States after initially being available in just a handful of regions, and over 15,000 units have been used by Amazon for deliveries in the U.S.

However, Rivian wants more from the EDV and is planning to bring more companies on board now that the early stages of testing is over and the vehicle has proven itself to be a formidable competitor in the space.

Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe said:

“And this focus on pilots is really reflective of the nature of this business, where these are large decisions around large numbers of vehicles for a lot of these bigger fleets. And it’s appropriate that we build effective working models for how the vehicles are serviced, what digital support the vehicles have, what infrastructure changes are necessary for each respective fleet.”

In December 2023, Rivian said it would partner with AT&T to bring the EDV to its first non-Amazon customer.

Who else would be a suitable partner for Rivian and the EDV? Perhaps FedEx or UPS would use the van and find it suitable for next-day and priority deliveries. FedEx currently uses a non-electric Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van.

AT&T is launching an EV pilot program as it will attempt to improve safety, reduce costs, and cut its carbon footprint. As a part of the commitment to be more environmentally friendly, it will use Rivian’s EDV as it was named an exclusive connectivity partner for the automaker in the United States and Canada.

One of several ways AT&T is aiming to cut costs is by increasing electrification throughout its fleet of vehicles. This is just one of several ways it hopes to reach carbon neutrality by 2035.

Along with utilizing EVs to decrease carbon emissions, it also has used strategies like route optimization, and reducing the size of its overall vehicle fleet. This has resulted in a 20 percent reduction in driving miles each year.

“We’re excited to purchase Rivian EVs for our fleet,” Hardmon Williams, the SVP at AT&T Connected Solutions, said. “This pilot is another important step in our ongoing efforts toward sustainability, reducing our carbon footprint and embracing a cleaner future for our operations. With advanced connectivity and a vision for a sustainable future, Rivian is setting the standard for the evolving demands of modern transportation.”

It is the first partnership that Rivian has announced with another company since ending its exclusivity with Amazon after the e-commerce giant invested $700 million and committed to buy 100,000 EDVs from the automaker.

In November, Rivian announced that it enabled companies to purchase custom-designed EDVs. Amazon said it “has been part of our plan” to let “others benefit” from Rivian’s technology.

Since launching the delivery of packages using the all-electric vans Rivian developed especially for its partnership with Amazon, the e-commerce giant has accumulated more than 3,000 EDV units from the Normal, Illinois-based automaker.

Rivian has received heavy support from Amazon since its early days. The two companies agreed on a 100,000-unit deal for the EDV, and Rivian started delivering them last year, while Amazon put them to work almost immediately.

So far, Rivian’s EDVs are carrying Amazon packages in more than 500 cities and regions across the United States. This is the fastest rollout of an electric delivery fleet at this scale in the U.S., and while the EV movement in the country is still young, this is an impressive feat.

The 500 cities and regions and over 3,000 delivery vehicles Amazon is currently using have delivered more than 75 million packages to customers across the United States.

In November 2022, Amazon said it had delivered 5 million packages in more than 100 cities across the U.S., all carried by over 1,000 EDV units.

The fleet has now grown to over 3,000 vehicles, tripling in size and helping Amazon reach the sustainability goals that it outlined in 2019.

The Pilot Program that Amazon and Rivian launched last Summer kicked off deliveries in a dozen cities across the U.S., including Chicago, Dallas, Kansas City, Nashville, Phoenix, San Diego, Seattle, and St. Louis.

However, by Christmas, Rivian EDVs were delivering Amazon packages in 100 U.S. cities, helping the company complete yet another successful holiday rush.

More cities will be a part of the Amazon-Rivian EDV deliveries soon. Amazon said that customers in Cleveland, Grand Rapids, Philadelphia, Santa Rosa, San Jose, Tampa, and Toledo, among other areas, will soon see EDVs delivering packages in their areas.

Amazon has already delivered more than 5 million packages in Rivian’s EDV, the acronym for ‘Electric Delivery Van.’ After launching a pilot program this past Summer in a dozen cities, including Baltimore, Chicago, Dallas, Kansas City, Nashville, Phoenix, San Diego, Seattle, and St. Louis, Rivian and Amazon have expanded their fleet of EDVs to over 1,000 units present in more than 100 cities across the United States.

With the 2022 Holiday season approaching, the two companies are now tasked with their biggest challenge by expanding into more cities and delivering more packages than ever. When the holidays roll around, Rivian will deliver Amazon packages in even more cities. Amazon said it will drop off packages in Austin, Boston, Denver, Houston, Indianapolis, Las Vegas, Madison, Newark, New York, Oakland, Pittsburgh, Portland, Provo, and Salt Lake City this year, a small step toward its 100,000 EDV goal by 2030.

Amazon’s Vice President of Transportation Udit Madan commented on the expansion, and while the partnership has come a long way, there is still plenty to accomplish in the next seven years:

“We’re always excited for the holiday season, but making deliveries to customers across the country with our new zero-emission vehicles for the first time makes this year unique. We’ve already delivered over 5 million packages with our vehicles produced by Rivian, and this is still just the beginning—that figure will grow exponentially as we continue to make progress toward our 100,000-vehicle goal.”

Amazon has quickly become a dominating force in the e-commerce world, and its sheer size alone as a business makes it an ideal candidate for testing EV-based package deliveries. The company has a goal to be net-zero carbon by 2040, ten years after it plans to have 100,000 Rivian EDVs bearing its name on the side. It is a necessary step in the company’s mission to be sustainable, and it might not be possible without Rivian.

“Fleet electrification is essential to reaching the world’s zero-emissions goal,” Rivian’s Chief Growth Officer Jiten Behl said. “So, to see our ramp up in production supporting Amazon’s rollout in cities across the country is amazing. Not just for the environment but also for our teams working hard to get tens of thousands of electric delivery vehicles on the road. They continue to be motivated by our combined mission and the great feedback about the vehicle’s performance and quality.”

While it is important to have a vehicle Amazon feels can lead the charge in the transition to sustainable package delivery, it is also important to keep drivers happy and comfortable in their vehicles. So far, Amazon drivers have expressed positive feedback regarding the Amazon EDV, complementing the vehicle’s tech and safety features.

“We started making deliveries with the electric vehicles from Rivian in August, and my team has had nothing but good things to say about the vans,” Julieta Dennis, owner of Kangaroo Logistics, an Amazon Delivery Service Partner, said. “The safety features, like the automatic emergency braking and 360-degree cameras, are game changers, and the drivers also love the overall comfort of the vehicle.”

Reuters said Amazon is looking to use the money over the next five years to establish a sizeable fleet of sustainable electric vans and trucks, as well as sustainable and low-emission package hubs across Europe. Amazon, which plans to be net-zero carbon by 2040, became the first e-commerce company in the United States to utilize electric delivery vans from a strategic partnership to deliver packages.

Amazon is utilizing the investment to drive innovation across the transportation industry, encouraging the expansion of available charging infrastructure across Europe. The money will help more than triple Amazon’s current number of delivery vehicles in Europe, which stands at 3,000. Amazon will attempt to have more than 10,000 EV delivery vehicles by 2025. The company also hopes to have more than 1,500 heavy goods vehicles in the coming years to be used at shipment hubs.

The report also stated that Amazon did not disclose what percentage of its European last-mile fleet is electric but that the 3,000 vans that fit the description delivered more than 100,000,000 packages last year.

Amazon is the only company that has worked to establish a fleet of electric delivery vans that are currently available. UPS and FedEx have committed to electrifying their fleets, but Amazon was willing to quickly adapt to the powertrain change. Other logistics networks have been slower to change, but the progress is there.

Rivian has been working with Amazon since 2019, when the e-commerce company inked a 100,000-unit deal for the automaker’s EDV. Amazon started delivering packages in vans in select cities last year and quickly expanded to Europe. The company said it plans to double its European network of “micro-mobility” hubs, as well as invest in expanding the number of EV chargers in the region.

Rivian signed an agreement with Mercedes-Benz in mid-September to see the two companies work jointly to build all-electric delivery vans for the European market.
